From over 500 to just 33
A century ago, the Central Highlands of Vietnam were home to more than 500 domesticated elephants. Today, only around 33 remain — a decline of over 90% in little more than a hundred years. Every elephant lost is a piece of the forest's memory quietly fading away.
For the Ê Đê and M'Nông peoples of Đắk Lắk, elephants are not merely animals. They are companions, members of the village, symbols of strength and shelter.
At Lonature, we believe caring for elephants means letting them be elephants: no riding, no chains, no shows. We simply walk beside them at a respectful distance as they roam the wild forest where they belong.
To protect one elephant is to protect an entire forest — and a promise to the next generation that the Highlands will still echo with the footsteps of elephants.
